Nizar Kamel Story

Ramadan from Yarmouk To Gaza

Im Nizar Kamel Al Zabas (50 years old), A Syrian man of Palestinian origin

I returned with my father to Gaza in the middle of the 1990’s, and two of my brothers stayed in the Yarmouk Camp till today. Back then I used to work as A “Misaharati” ( the person who awakens Muslim people on the night to eat the suhoor meal, the last meal before fasting) for almost 10 years in Mash-ham Aamer Area in the camp.

When I moved to Gaza, I kept awaken the people during the holy month of Ramadan in khan Younis city, and didn’t stop this tradition for more than 25 years.

People are used to hear my voice, to a degree that some of them don’t woke up for Al suhoor if I’m absent. Every night In Ramadan I walk for more than one kilometers around my neighborhood , and wear the same traditional clothes I used to wear in Syria which are “ Galabya , Tarboush and Palestinian Kufiyyeh”, and of course I don’t forget to carry my drum and hit it with drumsticks and call people to wake up

People are very content about my job and in the end of every Ramadan they give me money and some presents for the holiday
